In a landmark move announced during OpenAI’s 12-day product launch extravaganza, the tech giant has expanded its ChatGPT Search feature to all users. Previously restricted to paid subscribers, this tool is now free for anyone with a ChatGPT account, opening up new possibilities for how we interact with information online.

Since its launch in November 2024, ChatGPT Search has quickly gained traction for its ability to provide “timely answers with links to relevant web sources,” according to OpenAI. Now, with this feature available globally across all platforms, users can rely on ChatGPT to handle everything from breaking news and stock market updates to local restaurant recommendations—all without switching to a traditional search engine.

What makes this rollout even more compelling is the addition of advanced features like improved search speed and accuracy, embedded content (such as YouTube videos and images), and detailed business maps. These updates are designed to deliver a richer, more intuitive search experience for users.

Voice, Video, and Real-Time Collaboration

OpenAI has also taken a leap forward in user interaction by introducing voice-enabled search and verbal responses. This means ChatGPT can now respond to your queries out loud, making it a more dynamic and accessible assistant.

But that’s not all—users on iOS and Android can now take advantage of real-time video and screen-sharing capabilities, features that were first hinted at in May 2024. With these tools, ChatGPT goes beyond being just a chatbot; it becomes a collaborative partner for presentations, troubleshooting, or even brainstorming sessions.

To use these features, users can tap a video icon to start a call or select the screen-sharing option from a simple menu. While currently limited to Teams, Plus, and Pro users, OpenAI plans to roll these capabilities out to Enterprise and Edu subscribers by January 2025.

OpenAI’s strategy with ChatGPT Search seems to signal a direct challenge to traditional search engines. By integrating real-time updates, natural language processing, and multimedia content, the platform offers users a more interactive and comprehensive experience.

As Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, and Adam Fry, the ChatGPT Search product lead, explained during Day 8 of the company’s live-streamed announcements, the goal is to make information more accessible and engaging. “ChatGPT Search is not just a search tool; it’s a step toward blending natural language with real-time data to enhance productivity and creativity,” they noted.

Personal Take

The expansion of ChatGPT Search is undoubtedly a win for users seeking faster, smarter, and more intuitive ways to access information. Personally, I see this as a pivotal moment in the evolution of online search. While it’s exciting to see how far AI-powered tools have come, the competition this sparks among major tech players is equally thrilling. More innovation means more choices for users—and that’s a win for everyone.

OpenAI’s updates, including the introduction of its AI video generation tool Sora and a premium ChatGPT Pro subscription, demonstrate the company’s commitment to staying ahead in the AI race. With these features rolling out just weeks before the start of 2025, it’s clear that OpenAI intends to lead the conversation in AI technology for years to come.
